FACTORY BOSS, tells the story of Lin Dalin, the owner of a successful toy manufacturing business in Shenzhen, who works tirelessly to stand out in the extremely competitive marketplace for twenty years. As the economy endures hardships, Lin’s business takes a heavy blow. In order to avoid bankruptcy, Lin accepts a large order from a major international client, knowing the thin profit margin could keep his company alive for another quarter.
Ai Jing, a young investigative journalist, infiltrates Lin’s manufacturer to observe the working conditions of the so-called ‘blood and sweat’ factories. When the government announces a minimum wage increase, the revolt initiates the risk of factory strikes. Under pressure to meet demands from all sides, Lin Dalin is forced to decide whether or not to take the risk of a workers’ strike, or lose the only hope the factory has of being kept alive.
Lin Dalin faces many struggles in order to keep his manufacturer alive, especially in competition with cheaper Southeast Asian countries. New orders are scarce and pay is slow; all savings go towards safety and security of the factories as workers threaten to revolt. Under intense pressure from all sides, Lin Dalin faces the challenge of holding his small business together, while still aiming to fill an even bigger order than expected.
FACTORY BOSS is a riveting exploration of the challenges of the manufacturing industry in China.
