Some go to the cinema to experience real life stories, but many of us make the trip out to the theater to experience cinema, to be “wow”-ed and momentarily escape in a fantastical, imaginary world. Through this program, we hope you can take a brief escape to another world where we can reflect upon society and ourselves.

Simon Liu / Short Films / Hong Kong, USA / 2015 / Experimental / 8 minsIn Donkey Riding, director Simon Liu gathered hand-processed and rephotographed 16mm from his trip back home to Hong Kong. Journeying back to the house he grew up in, Liu pieces together scrapbook audio recordings revealing some of his early attempts at speaking, broken sentences interrupted by toy sirens, images of Tokyo streets and Los Angeles highways. He also captures fleeting memories on trains and out of car windows while sharing moments with intimate images of people who are happy to see him. Liu explores these deeply familiar faces and spaces by indulging in curiosities about the potential of 16mm film.

Cunning Hou spreads nails to puncture tires to attract business. Almost every car driving down this road got punctured tires and had to be repaired at his garage. On this day, one business-minded monk like Hou was going to the village to release the soul of a dead from suffering and make some profits. While driving down this road, the tires of his car was punctured too. A cunning garage manager and a business minded monk began their battle of words on the price for tire repairing. Several rounds later, the monk which was once be sure of success was defeated on the final round, and he had no choice but to pay Hou a sum of money and leave frustrated.

A distraught daughter visits her old apartment only to discover that her distant father is living with someone else. The interior of the house has seen little change, only the decay brought about by time. Toys and gifts lay misplaced, as if a young girl is still living in the house. Upon entering the kitchen, she encounters her dad. Initially awkward, they eventually rekindled old memories. However, she soon realizes that something is amiss.

A deletion of one’s creation as self-confrontation is a lesson in responsibility and acceptance of loss in the natural cycle of life.

Employing animation and historical footage, the film depicts several short phantasmagoric dreams of an unknown city, which seem to occur in the mind of an imprisoned white American. The film is a response to the Hyper-reality of today's China. But there is no answer or solution has been revealed in the film, as there is no answer and solution for this pathetic world, either.

The film depicts the beauty of a young adult's determined transition through featuring a single couch, a step of re-position and a longing of solitary. The cast and crew are Shanghai-based young gallery curator, architect, designer and art student who stand nearby their first intersection of career choice and life paths. The team devoted their weekends in completion of this film with generous supports from their seniors in the local art field.
