MY 4,500 HEXAGONS is a documentary that follows Brooklyn-based artist Anni Reffsin on her journey to complete an English paper pieced quilt composed of over 4,500 hexagonal textile fragments gathered from her relationships and projects in costume/apparel design. In the process, Reffsin works to reshape her relationship with her adoptive mother and herself.

Anni Reffsin’s hand-stitched English paper pieced quilt, “Untitled”, will be on view in the lobby of the Regal Union Square on August 11th.

Together, the pieces invite new perspectives on transracial adoption, artistic process, and reciprocity in queer Asian American communities.

Joe Soonthornsawad is a queer, second-generation Thai-American director and producer based in Brooklyn, New York, originally from West Chester, Ohio. Trained as an anthropologist and social computing researcher, he is interested in telling stories about queer and Asian American people living boldly in unlikely places, and finding compelling stories wherever his curiosity leads him. His debut narrative short, Grand Super Buffet, will premiere in 2024. Nityasya Belapurkar is a queer South Asian storyteller and oral historian from Mumbai. At the height of the pandemic, Nityasya co-founded Soup Canvas, a part art benefit and part virtual art gallery committed to ending food insecurity in the US. In 2021, she created South Asian Memory Work, a multimedia digital storybook that celebrates the expansiveness of the South Asian American experience. She's interested in capturing stories that imagine new futures for Asian and queer communities.
