AAIFF46 Panel: Retrospectives in Dialogue

50 min

A special programming block for AAIFF46, “Retrospectives in Dialogue” aims to connect filmmakers across generations in conversation, by pairing older, seminal films with contemporary works that explore similar themes.

This year’s themes revolve around:

  • the relationship between filmmaking and activism, and
  • the impact of urban development and gentrification on Asian communities.

Join us for an online panel discussion with the filmmakers on Thursday, August 3 at 7pm ET.

Moderated by Abby Sun, Director of Artist Programs and Editor of Documentary magazine at the International Documentary Association (IDA). She was also co-curator of the 2021/2022 film series, “My Sight is Lined with Visions: 1990s Asian American Film & Video” with Keisha Knight.

Films in our “Retrospectives in Dialogue” programming are the following films:

  • BIG FIGHT IN LITTLE CHINATOWN (dir. Karen Cho, 2022)

Set against the backdrop of the COVID pandemic and a rise in anti-Asian racism, this documentary takes us into the lives of residents, businesses, and community organizers whose neighborhoods are facing active erasure.

  • THE FALL OF THE I-HOTEL (dir. Curtis Choy, 1983)

After a decade of spirited resistance to the razing of San Francisco’s Manilatown, America’s most dramatic affordable housing battleground ends in the August 4, 1977 brutal eviction of the elderly tenants of the International Hotel

  • HITO HATA: RAISE THE BANNER (dir. Robert Nakamura and Duane Kubo, 1980)

This narrative feature draws upon the hardships of Little Tokyo residents in the 1970s and their struggles with the displacement of longtime Japanese American residents as gentrification sets in.
