On a college backpacking trip, 18-year-old Olivia, a Chinese student, tries to fit into an American social group and get closer to Jake, the club president. She struggles to keep up with experienced hikers Jake and Kayla, which heightens her insecurity as a foreigner with an accent. This self-doubt leads her to distance herself from Zihao, another Chinese student with heavily accented English, despite his efforts to befriend her.

As they venture deeper into the woods, Olivia grapples with questions of her identity. When Zihao reveals his struggles with invisibility as a fellow international student, Olivia is torn between her desire to belong and her need to reconnect with her community.
